If this crucial section, which will help the Great Miami River Recreational Trail (GMRRT) reach the west side of Interstate 75 via an existing ODOT-owned bridge, is not constructed, the City and Shelby County will lose an important link to trail users from the south and trail destinations to the south. The GMRRT connection allows over 90,000 trail users in the Miami Valley to have scenic views of the Great Miami every year. Furthermore, without this connection, the 49,800 residents of Shelby County (including the 20,550 residents of Sidney) must continue to drive south to at least Piqua to reach a significant regional trail along the river that is present in their own community. While the proposed project will not directly link the northern region to the existing system, it does supply a crucial, challenging interstate crossing at a logical point, as well bringing trail users closer to the GMRRT current terminus in Piqua. ODOT District 7 is currently willing to work with the city of Sidney to make this under interstate connection (via permit).
The City of Sidney's Parks and Recreation Major Objective number one is "Using the Great Miami River Corridor". Clearly, this is a top priority for the city and as such, this proposed project should be recognized as a number one opportunity for the city of Sidney's Parks and Recreation Department.
Building this connection will get Sidney one step closer to the economic engine that the nation's longest paved trail system in America. It will drive economic growth in Sidney, especially in its recreational and historical sites along with the downtown that is currently going through a renaissance. With the additions of new restaurants, rehabilitation of a historic theater to promote the arts, and the opening of boutiques around the Sidney court square, the trail will be used not only by the locals but will bring tourists into Sidney.
Besides the tourism, the recreational trail also provides active recreation along the historical, Sidney Feeder Canal, that supplied water and commerce to the Miami Erie Canal in Lockington, prior to the 1913 flood which wiped out many sections of the canal, about the time the train took over transporting goods across the country. The active recreation provided by the trail will assist with the nations increased health costs by providing an outlet for safe recreation on an off road trail for runners, walkers and bikers.
