Wright State University - Lake Campus seeks to assist manufacturers in West Central Ohio with their immediate and future employment concerns by expanding the footprint of the existing Business Enterprise Center (BEC) and renaming it the Workforce Development Center. The new center will be approximately 18,000 square feet of flexible space with labs (clean and dirty), instructional space, and an area to showcase the local products/processes of our sponsoring manufacturers.

In a world where technology is rapidly changing, a center that can provide training on the machinery of today and that of tomorrow is essential. The focus areas of the Workforce Development Center will continue to include Mechanical, Electrical, Pneumatics, and Hydraulics, CNC, Robotics, Programmable Logic Controllers, Automation Systems, 3D Printing, Certified Calibration Center, and Facilities Maintenance of Equipment. Flexibility will be built into the new center so as to provide training in additional technologies as they arise. The ultimate goal of this center is to give Ohio businesses the employees they need with technology-focused credentials who are well prepared for a job in today’s advanced, technology-infused economy.

In a region where the manufacturing sector is so strong and unemployment rates are among the lowest in the state, it is also essential to provide advanced training opportunities for incumbent workers and their employers. SkillsTrac, born from a Department of Labor grant in 2007, has served over 500 students since its inception in the BEC at Lake Campus and 50 students are currently enrolled in the program. Economic Development Directors and industry leaders in the northern Miami Valley agree that having high-quality, reasonably-priced advanced training opportunities available locally is allowing the region to synergistically reap benefits in three different ways: 1) training dollars are kept locally, 2) high local employment rates are being achieved, and 3) the region’s manufacturing base is booming.

Wright State’s mission of ‘We transform the lives of our students and the communities we serve’ applies to all of Raider Country—even the northern tip where Lake Campus-Wright State’s only regional campus—is located. The Workforce Development Center will expand training opportunities in an ever-changing industry.
The BEC evaluates programming and center usage annually, in an effort to provide the training and support needed by our partners in west central Ohio. Success will be determined by the number of businesses utilizing the facility for training, consulting, customized and open enrollment contract training, and supporting business entrepreneurs with starting a business. The BEC evaluates the number of jobs created and the increase in tax revenue in the region. Our top priority is responding to the workforce development and training needs that our regional partners need to remain viable and provide stable growth to our local economy.

Data for all questions was obtained from the Ohio Manufacturing Association to ascertain attrition due to retirement, as well as LMI & JFS projections.
42. New programming is needed to increase the talent pipeline. With our existing facility, we do not have room to offer programs to the untapped workforce that has barriers to employment (non-violent felony conviction, unable to pass shop or applied math or basics of manufacturing tests, etc.).
43. Regional manufacturing companies need a stable workforce to remain at their current location. Ohio needs to retain stable or growing companies, which can be accomplished by upskilling employees and creating a strong pipeline of people with the proper skill level.
44. Conservatively, data suggest 20% loss of skilled employees in our existing manufacturing workforce within 3 to 5 years. Currently, we have 32,724 citizens working in manufacturing. We will need to replace over 6,500 employees to sustain current employment levels.
