Quality of Life
The Dayton Art Institute - Building and Art Preservation
The Dayton Art Institute is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019;exciting and challenging to maintain a 90 year old iconic building which is commonly referred to as the Crowned Jewel of the Dayton skyline. The DAI is respectfully requesting state capital budget funds to rebuild the museum roof, replace the remaining original lower level windows and per the suggestion of Homeland Security the doors to the historic and Rotunda entrances and HVAC replacement (2 air handlers/1 steam boiler)

The state capital budget dollars received in the past have definitely leveraged both private and foundation dollars and allowed us to complete the projects on our list. The DAI is currently in a major Centennial Capital campaign drive that will allow us to responsibly take care of this historic building so that it can be enjoyed by many for years to come.

The DAI is currently in a major Centennial Capital Campaign drive that will be ongoing through 2020 and allow us to responsibly take care of this iconic building listed on the National Historic Register. We will be able to match and leverage any state capital budget dollars received in this cycle.

The DAI has performed an exhaustive review of possible federal, state and local funding that could be used for the purpose of building upkeep and safety. Surprisingly, the state capital budget funds the only viable source of significant funding that can be used for items like rebuilding the museum roof or purchasing HVAC replacements - not very exciting requests but critical for the long term preservation of the art and the building, which is listed on the National Historic Register. These types of projects are difficult to fund through private donors.
Community Details
Preserving this iconic building listed on the National Historic Register, is home to world-renowned art and artifacts and is the responsibility of the Dayton community to preserve and protect these treasures. The DAI remains open and is a critical economic driver when attracting new companies and new employees to the region. The DAI is committed to creating meaningful experiences for all. We can only deliver this mission if we have a secure and well-maintained facility.

Preserving the art and being able to attract top quality art shows because the building is well preserved is key for the future of our region. If the building falls into disrepair due to lack of funding, then we will no longer be able to showcase world class art, whether the DAI owns it or it is a show on loan. The items requested this cycle are needed - roof, lower level windows and doors replaced and replacing 2 air handlers and 1 steam boiler in the HVAC system - all allowing for the exact conditions inside the building that must be maintained to very high standards in order to house and protect the valuable art displays.

The job creation questions always remain a challenge for any arts organization. While we may not create any new direct jobs because of this funding, we certainly are used regularly as a job/company/people recruiter for the region.
