Economic Benefits Study of the Upper Little Miami River Corridor
This project will show how protecting and improving the ecosystem in the LMR corridor enhances property value, provides recreational value, and contributes to the local economy. Local Data will be collected on ecosystem services in the corridor, which will be linked to home values using statistical techniques. Visitor counts and surveys at parks, including the bike path, will be used to determine recreational value. Grant funds will provide resources for data collection and analysis.

Ohio State University will provide non-auditable match to the project through a graduate student who will be funded as a graduate teaching assistant during the academic year and who will work on this project as part of his thesis. The university will also pay for a senior research (Sohngen) to work with the graduate student to design the data collection and analysis. Sohngen and the graduate student will design the on-line survey using Qualtrics, which is site-licensed software for on-line data collection paid for by Ohio State University. OSU will provide the iPads that enumerators will use to collect the data. Matching funds equal $79,101.00. The matching funds have been earmarked through the economics department of the Ohio State University.

Community Details
Water is the most important resource Greene County and its communities has, but if we dont take care of it, it will be worth nothing. As a society our value of things is based on its monetary worth. This study will help us define that value. The community will benefit when decision makers have a clear understanding of the tax and recreational value of the Little Miami River and its corridor. Community members would also benefit from an understanding of how the costs for repairing high water damage will continue to grow, if we do not building sustainably. This study proposes to find both the costs and the benefits of having the Little Miami River in the community. Without any specific numbers, policy leaders can not get a real understanding of the need to protect this valuable resource.
With a report on the cost/benefits of the Little Miami River and its corridor, we can work with communities and the county to address issues that raise taxpayer costs and promote ways that increase economic benefits to the communities . We will consider the project a success when we have numbers derived from a study by a reputable institution like OSU and can take it to council meetings, planning boards, county officers and show them in concrete terms what they can gain by protecting the quality of this national and state scenic river. Our goal would be to make 10 presentations within the first year to elected and/or appointed policy leaders in Greene County. They number 23 entities. We would consider this project a success if 1/3 of these groups change a policy based on the report. Many governmental bodies have to review their land use policies on a regular basis. If we time our report to those evaulation times, we can influence policies that will protect the future value of the river.
