Quality of Life
The Spotted Turtle Trail including Wetland Restoration
We are in the midst of creating a 15-mile long regional trail system called the Spotted Turtle Trail to connect the parks and reserves along the Beaver Creek Wetlands corridor. This new Ohio Regional Trail will provide easy access to these locations. The intent is to dramatically increase enjoyment of the unique natural space, to inspire many new people with its beauty and diversity, to increase awareness, and appreciation for and support of this irreplaceable natural asset.

Community Details

For over three decades, we have dedicated ourselves to the tireless protection and restoration of the Beaver Creek wetlands corridor, spanning over 2,400 acres.
Wetlands are some of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet. Since the 1700’s, 90% of the wetlands have been eliminated in Ohio. Unfortunately, many of Ohio's wetlands have been destroyed or degraded over time, often as a result of human activities like agriculture, development, and mining. This has had profound consequences for both the environment and our communities, including increased flooding, decreased water quality, and the loss of important species.
They are among the most productive and biologically diverse ecosystems in the world, and Ohio is home to a number of unique wetland habitats that are vital to the health of our environment and communities. Wetlands help to filter pollutants from our waterways, replenish the underground aquifer (our region’s only source of clean drinking water), protect against floods and storm surges, and provide critical habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species, including many that are threatened or endangered. They also provide recreational opportunities from birdwatching and photography, to fishing and hiking.
But there is hope. Through conservation and restoration efforts, we can help to protect and preserve these critical ecosystems. We are able to ensure a healthier, more resilient environment for ourselves and future generations. We can protect our communities from flooding, preserve our natural heritage, and create new economic opportunities for sustainable development. By restoring this vital ecosystem, providing safe accessible trails and boardwalks, more members of our community can enjoy these beautiful spaces that provide habitats for wildlife and plants. It will also provide expanded opportunities for education in partnership with the area schools.
Our goal is to dramatically increase the public’s enjoyment of the unique natural space, inspire people with its beauty and diversity, to increase awareness and appreciation of this irreplaceable natural asset.
