Community of Well-Being Initiative
The Community of Well-Being Initiative represents the critical missing pieces of the data and the tools that will enable community leaders—civic visionaries, local government, funders, non-profit organizations, employers, educators and healthcare providers—to align their efforts to realize greater community well-being and economic vibrancy, so we can make Dayton a great place to live for everyone and return the region to the powerhouse it once was.

As we move from the Discovery and Development phase (funded) to the Launch phase, our fundraising team has developed a comprehensive fundraising strategy that includes federal grants, national foundations local foundations, corporate support, individual philanthropy and earned income. As of the submission date, none of these funds have been secured. Given the seven-county reach of the Community of Well-Being Initiative (MVRPC + Clark County) and its transformational nature inherent in the Well-Being Index dataset, we know PDAC support would send a strong leadership message to potential funders that there is regional buy-in.

We are working closely with Dr. Josephine Wilson from the School of Public Health at Wright State University. Dr. Wilson has written Federal grants that have brought over $18MM to the region. Given the holistic and comprehensive nature of the initiative, we believe there are applicable program grants for which we would qualify at Department of Labor, HHS (Administration for Children and Families, Administration for Community Living, Health Resources and Services Administration and SAMHSA), HUD, EPA, Department of Defense (Veteran’s Affairs), Department of Agriculture (Food and Nutrition Service, Rural Housing Service, Rural Utilities Service) and the Department of Transportation. As new RFPs are being posted regularly, we are aggressively seeking out those that are most relevant.
Community Details
The Community of Well-Being Initiative has three major benefits from an Economic Development perspective: Workforce Preparedness/Expansion; Employee Retention; Productivity.

From a larger Community Need* standpoint, this is all about alignment. The data provided by the Gallup Well-Being Index, given Well-Being's role as a LEADING community indicator, will give us a new and most relevant metric around which civic visionaries, local governments, funders, non-profit organizations, employers, educators and healthcare providers—to align policy and resource allocation decisions to realize greater economic vibrancy. It also allows us to hold ourselves and our leaders accountable.

(*Anticipating a need before it is asked for is the definition of innovation!)

As our Advisory Board member Mike McDorman, President of the Greater Springfield Partnership, stated in an early conversation, "we have so many great things being developed and in the pipeline in Clark County, perhaps the most exciting time I've seen. However, we have too many people struggling with hopelessness, and if we don't address that, these plans will never be fully realized." Workforce Development has three components, Hard Skills, Soft Skills and Well-Being. We have multiple organizations addressing the first two. But if you are not experiencing well-being, all the Hard and Soft Skills are irrelevant.

Below are some general outcomes associated with Well-Being:
• Improved Health Outcomes
• Higher Educational Attainment
• Enhanced Employability
• Less Addiction and Mental Health Issues
• Decline in Poverty
• More Productivity and Fewer Sick Days
• Less Strain on Government and Non-Profit Services
• More Community Engagement

And below are some specific Well-Being outcomes from Gallup:
• Compared to Employees Who Are Thriving Across All Five Well-Being Domains, Employees Thriving in only Physical Wellbeing...
- Missed 68% more work due to poor health in the last year.
- Were almost three times more likely to file for workers’ compensation claims in the last year
- Were five times more likely to seek out a new employer in the next 12 months
- Were more than twice as likely to have changed employers in the following 12 months.

Adults Thriving in all Five Well-Being Domains compared to those Thriving in only in Physical Wellbeing:
• Are 36% More Likely to Report Full Recovery After Hardship
• Are over 2x More Likely to Exhibit Adaptability

We determined the job creation listed because we did not want to overpromise, yet we know it is not 0. We also know that Job Creation is not the only indicator of Economic Development.

PLEASE NOTE: Apple Operating System does not allow for multiple counties to be designated. Counties impacted are: MVRPC area: Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby and a little bit of Warren Counties, plus Clark County.
