West Memory Gardens Flood Mitigation Project
The City of Moraine, Ohio requests funding assistance to help remediate flooding issues at the West Memory Gardens. The origin of the water causing the flooding comes from an agricultural field across the street from the cemetery. During periods of heavy rainfall, the water needs to be better routed on cemetery property, down a swail and into a creek at the East side of the property line. Currently the water pools on the cemetery grounds with no path to the creek.

Everstory, the owner of West Memory Gardens, will contribute the remaining funds for the project which aren’t fulfilled by any federal assistance. Everstory has already spent in excess $300,000 in flood mitigation improvements at the location. In 2020 and 2021, the company invested $207,000 to have a new box culvert installed to accommodate the volume of water flow onto the property. Additionally, as part of the same project, Everstory paid to have the creek dredged, creek banks secured and trees removed from the creek to increase the creek's ability to move water more quickly off the property. As a result of rushing water on the roadways of the cemetery, Everstory has also invested additional funds into roadway patch projects and materials to help keep the roads in as acceptable a condition as possible.

Community Details
Established in 1959, West Memory Gardens is a cemetery serving the communities of Moraine and Dayton, OH. West Memory Gardens contains 5 gardens, including a section for infant burials. West Memory Gardens is also the burial site for a Tuskegee Airman. Currently, the cemetery is being adversely affected by water intrusion from a source that is not controllable by the cemetery. While these water issues originate outside of the memory gardens, families whose loved ones are buried at the Gardens have incurred emotional distress resulting from witnessing flooding that occurs in particular seasons, or during periods of heavy rainfall. Fixing the water issues at the Gardens will give peace to the families whose loved ones are interred there.
