Dayton Cottage Village
The homeless issues facing our community requires developing unique quality housing solutions for homeless citizens by reducing construction costs, while continuing to provide opportunities for tenants to have private space and services to address their needs and maintain housing stability.
To that end, MVHO will develop the Dayton Cottage Village with 25 approximately 400 square foot cottages, each with a bathroom, kitchen, and other necessities to make the unit a home.

There are many factors that can lead to homelessness. When shelter or other temporary or permanent housing is not available, those who are unhoused will find places to shelter, including abandoned buildings, city park structures, and other secluded locations. In March of this year, a group of approximately 12 homeless citizens had found shelter in an abandoned structure after being moved from an encampment. The 7,000 square-foot house where they were squatting caught fire, and the structure was destroyed. Unfortunately, five of the squatters were in the building at the time of the fire and were killed. The loss of life intensified awareness of the plight of the street homeless and the lack of affordable housing in Dayton and Montgomery County, motivating governmental agencies and housing and service providers to look for new and creative solutions to provide adequate housing to serve the needs of the homeless community. The Dayton Cottage Village is one such solution, as it is intended to provide an alternative form of permanent supportive housing for this vulnerable population.

We believe any community will be concerned about the development of the Village in their neighborhood. MVHO is planning to work with the community, provide education about MVHO and what the organization has done successfully for over 30 years. We plan to enter into a good neighbor agreement, clarifying neighbors and MVHO's expectations. MVHO will work closely with the City's Community Engagement Department to facilitate discussions and meetings with the community and leadership. We know the concept of "NIMBY" may foster fear and concern, but we will do what we have had to do many times as we have developed projects throughout Montgomery County for years.
