Improved Solid Rocket Motor Manufacturing Capacity
The US must bolster its munitions stockpiles to maintain operational readiness. Funding this program will expand the Defense Industrial Base for producing materials for rocket nozzles and other critical rocket motor components that are typically difficult to produce and have limited suppliers. Increasing munitions output, affordably and quickly, is a major priority of the DoD. This program supports that mission by qualifying additional suppliers and increasing throughput with existing suppliers.

The United States and Department of Defense (DoD) has been supporting countries in need of military aid by supplying missiles and other armaments. This has caused US stockpiles to decrease, which must get replenished. In addition, the US Defense Industrial Base (DIB) is not prepared for a surge in demand for armament production, should the need arise. This is partly due to limited suppliers of qualified materials.
Carbon/Carbon and Carbon/SiC billets are used to produce critical missile components. These materials are difficult to manufacture and typically have long lead times. There are few current suppliers of qualified material, which greatly limits output. Textum has demonstrated the ability to produce materials that are capable of meeting operational requirements; however, they are not qualified for use in weapon systems and must undergo extensive testing. This program will supply the necessary resources to enable qualification testing of Textum’s materials; doing so will expand the DIB to meet DoD demand and ensure operational readiness.
